About Us

Promoting Peace & Global Stability Since 1949

The Atlantic Council of the United Kingdom is an independent, non-governmental charity dedicated to educating and engaging the public on international affairs, diplomacy, and global security. Founded upon the values enshrined in the 1949 North Atlantic Treaty, we support informed debate on the UK’s role in international order and cooperation.

Our History

The NATO alliance arose from the ashes of World War II in 1949. In its wake came the British Atlantic Committee (BAC), which was established with backing from the Foreign & Commonwealth Office in 1953.

Its core aim of promoting understanding of NATO, the North Atlantic Treaty, and international affairs remained steadfast throughout the Cold War and the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991.

In 1993, the BAC merged with Peace Through NATO, to become the Atlantic Council of the United Kingdom (ACUK). ACUK is proud to have been carrying out its charitable work ever since.
